Larry Cain, 86, of Darlington, IN, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at Franciscan Hospital in Lafayette, IN, Sunday. Born on September 29th, 1938, in Lafayette, IN, Larry was third of twelve children of Paul and Velera Cain. He is preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Pat Lough, Tom Cain, and Judith Mullen; brother-in-law, Bob Weliver; and life-long family friend, Regina Mellady. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Joy Vannice Cain; his sons Gary (Karen) Cain, Tim (Kim) Cain, Joe (Sally) Cain, and Michael (Kelly) Cain; grandchildren, Jennifer Sermerscheim, Cody (Kelly) Cain, Aaron (Lindsay) Cain, Vanessa (Kenneth) Redmond, Veronica (Joe) Vinklarek, Chloie (Trevor) Storms, and Abraham Cain; 17 great grandchildren; and 1 great-great granddaughter. He is also survived by his siblings, Jerry (Sydney) Cain, Dan (Sharol) Cain, Kenny (Marlene) Cain, Mary Weliver, Terry (Amy) Cain, Candy Adams, Deb (Dan) Gluesenkamp and Jack (Karen) Cain; brothers-in-law, Stan Lough and Don Mullen; and sister-in-law, Betty Cain.

Larry spent his childhood in White County, IN. His family moved to Darlington when he was in eighth grade where they lived and worked on a dairy farm. He was a graduate of Darlington High School, class of 1956, where he met and married his high school sweetheart, Joy. They married on June 29 th , 1957. Together they lived in Darlington where they raised their four sons. He was a machine operator at R.R. Donnelley's for 48 years, retiring in 2004. Larry was an active member of the National Guard for 10 years. He was a volunteer firefighter at the Darlington Fire Department for over 60 years, serving as Chief for 12. He also helped start the first-responders program in Darlington.

Larry was a man of service who loved his church, family, friends, and community. He was a member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church where he served as an Usher for many years. He was also a member of the American Legion in Darlington for 24 years. Larry loved dancing, road-farming, and bonfires. Larry was known for lending a helping hand to anyone that needed it. His favorite part of the year was enjoying the Holidays with his family, bringing spirit, happiness, and love. He loved to travel with his wife, sharing many special memories.

His funeral service will be held at St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Wednesday, September 17th . Visitation will be from 9am to Noon with Mass immediately following. He will be buried with military rights and fire service at Greenlawn Cemetery in Darlington, IN.
