Richard Cox Shelton
Crawfordsville – Richard "Dick" C. Shelton passed away June 5, 2020 in Lafayette, Indiana. He was born February 9, 1941. He was the son of Oral C. and Ethel Louise Shelton.
Dick graduated from Darlington High School in 1959. He attended Purdue University. Dick served the Indiana State Police (ISP) for 34 years. During his time with ISP, he patrolled Marion, Boone and Montgomery Counties, District Commander at Lafayette and retired as a Major of the Gaming Division. He continued his life of public service with the Indiana Department of Transportation for 17 years. He had a total of 51 years of service for the State of Indiana.
Dick is survived by his children, Duane (Diane) Shelton of Bainbridge, Doug (Angel) Shelton of Fishers, Debbie (Bill) Calder of Crawfordsville and Curtis Shelton of Greencastle. He had seven grandchildren Chase and Kyle (Krish) Calder, Ron, Jacob, Adam, Brandon and Tensley Shelton and great grandchildren Johannah and Konley Calder. He is survived by his three brothers, David (Jeanette), Jim (Sally) and Bob (Carolyn) and many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews.
Dick was a past Master of the Masons. He enjoyed barrel racing and trail riding his horses. He was an avid coin collector. Most importantly he enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
He was proceeded in death by his parents and nephew Aaron Shelton.
Due to the National health concerns a private family service will be held on Tuesday, June 9 at Burkhart Funeral Home in Crawfordsville with his burial following at Greenlawn Cemetery in Darlington. The family will hold a celebration of life this summer so that all his friends may join in to reminisce and share stories of how he touched their lives.
