Vera McAlister Cheek

May 30, 1936 to December 2, 2025

Vera McAlister Cheek went to join her heavenly father, surrounded by her family, on December 2, 2025 at Ben Hur Nursing Home. She was 89.

Born on May 30, 1936 in Coatesville Indiana to Charles and Vivian Minter Stewart. On May 29, 1954, Vera married Samuel John McAlister. Vera attended Wallace High School and graduated from Crawfordsville High School in 1954 and then went on to attend IU, IUPUI, and St. Mary's of the Woods. She worked in social services positions at Welfare Dept, Police Dept, and Montgomery County youth service Bureau. Vera was one of the first Meter Maids of Crawfordsville Police Department. She introduced the Community Action Program to Montgomery County, setting up operations and maintaining office. Vera was a member of Eagles, Moose, American Legion, Sunshine Chorus, Seniors of Crawfordsville and Hearts and Hands for Jesus. She attended Whitesville Christian Church and was a member of Darlington Congregational Christian Church.

Surviving family includes: sons, Marlon (Julie) McAlister, and Myron (Teresa) McAlister; daughter, Jennifer (Dan) Harshbarger; grandchildren, Cole, Melissa, Sam, Levi, and Rachel; great-grandchildren, Sarah, Peyton, Wyatt, Rylin, Jordyn, Kameron, Piper, Nikolas, and Peryll; great-great grandchild, Cameron; sister, Sharon (Carlos) Goode; brother, Warren (Shirley) Stewart; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.

Vera was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Samuel McAlister, David D. Todd, John Line and Jerry Cheek; grandchildren, Cameron, and Carley; and brother Chuck (Linda) Stewart.

Memorial donations in honor of Vera can be made at the Animal Welfare League, 1104 Big Four Arch Rd, Crawfordsville, IN 47933 or Sunshine Van, 922 E South Blvd, Crawfordsville, IN 47933.

Visitation for Vera will be at Burkhart Funeral Home, on Monday, December 8, 2025 from noon to 2 PM, with service starting at 2 PM. Burial will follow at Waynetown Masonic Cemetery.
