Roger Alan Wright, 66, of Coatesville passed away Friday morning at Hendricks Regional.
Surviving family includes: son, Roger Eric (Sara) Wright and their children, Owen and Levi; daughter, Kristine (Mark) Jarboe and their children, Samantha, Grant and Sean; son, Gabriel (Macon) Wright and their daughter, Zuri; daughter, Stacey (Dustin) Weir; two brothers, Rodney (Debbie) Wright and Bobby Wright; cousin, Linda Kingry.
Born March 29, 1956 in Swaffham, England, he was the son of Robert R. Wright and Frances Kingry Wright. He graduated from Crawfordsville High School in 1974 and earned an associate degree in Aviation Maintenance.
Roger was an Eagle Scout with Troop 326 at St. Bernard's. During his time, he earned 43 merit badges and the coveted Eagle Scout. He was a minisino fire-crafter in scouting. He was also active in DeMolay, becoming Master Councilor of the Chapter and receiving the Representative DeMolay award. During this time, earned numerous badges for Community Service, Masonic Service, Attendance, Merit, and visiting nearby Chapters in Central Indiana.
Roger served in the US Air Force, where he was stationed at Wurtsmith AFB in Oscoda, Michigan. He obtained the rank of Staff Sgt (E-5).
He served with the volunteer fire service for 38 years, starting at Walnut Township in New Ross, then for 22 years at Wayne Township in Marion County, and then 9 years at Floyd Township in Putnam County, where he retired as chief of the department. During his time on the departments, he held many positions including but not limited to, EMS Captain, LT, HazMat Captain, Assistant Chief and Chief.
During his career at Wayne Twp FD, he earned Second-Class, First-Class Firefighter Fire 1/2, 7 State Master Firefighter certificates in Arson, Aircraft Crash Rescue, Management, Instructor, Tactics, Fire Inspection, and Hazardous Material. Attending the long course, became certified as a Hazardous Material Technician.
He received the Medal of Valor for rescuing a handicapped individual from a burning house at Heritage Lake in 2011. Received numerous awards for fire runs including CPR Save, and EMT of the Year. Due to health reasons, he was forced to retire in 2014.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Graveside services for immediate family will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery North in Crawfordsville. Arrangements were entrusted to Burkhart Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to HLNAC, In Memory of Roger Wright, Heritage Lake POA, 1000 Clubhouse, Coatesville, IN 46121.
