John Wesley Gosney

April 12, 1970 – Sept. 17, 2026

John Wesley Gosney of Crawfordsville passed away Thursday evening at Franciscan Health of Lafayette at the age of 56.

Born April 12, 1970 in Greenfield, he was the son of Richard Melvin Gosney and Marilyn Joyce Lyons Gosney. He graduated from Greenfield High School in 1988. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from Purdue and Master’s degree from Butler University. He married the former Melissa Gresham in 1997 at Greenfield. She survives.

John worked for Indiana University for 25 years and Purdue University for 3 years. He was an adjunct professor at IU, Butler, Baker College, and most recently Grand Canyon University. He was also the author of many books through Macmillan Publishing and a man with a wonderfully unique wit. He loved his cats, legos, reading, music, sports, as well as spending time laughing and being with his family.

Surviving family includes: wife, Melissa Gosney of Crawfordsville; daughter, Genna Overbey (Bryan) of Greencastle; two sons, Jackson Gosney and George Gosney, both of Crawfordsville; five grandchildren, Lincoln Overbey, Lucas Overbey, Wesley Overbey, Theo Overbey and Wren Overbey; two sisters, Nancy Maxwell (Greg) and Barbara Skirvin (Larry); along with several nieces, nephews and extended family members.

There will be a visitation beginning at 2:00 pm with a service following at 3:00 pm on October 10, 2026 at Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church located at 307 Simpson Street Greencastle, IN 46135. Immediately following service we will have a Celebration of Life to begin at 4:00 pm at The Whisk located at 18 S Jackson Street Greencastle, IN. We will visit and share our stories with food, drinks, and music. Feel welcome to join us anytime for the service, celebration, or both.

John’s wish was to be cremated and have his family gather to remember his life. Cremation arrangements were entrusted to Burkhart Funeral Home.
