Jack Hawn

Jack Hawn of Crawfordsville passed away Sunday in his home at the age of 87.  He battled cancer for 16 years and dementia for over 5 years.

Jack served his country in the U.S. Army for 6 years.  After his discharge, he was a mechanic at LaFrance Fire Engines, which led him to be a fireman in Arlington Heights, Illinois.  He was a 58 year member of the Masonic Lodge in Lebanon, driving cars in parades, and a member of the American Legion in Darlington.

Mowing was his favorite thing to do.  He would mow the yard in one direction, then would start over mowing cross-wise, start over and mow the lawn diagonally.  He always wanted his yard perfect and to have a clean car.  He would take his companion, Sonja, on motorcycle rides for 50 miles to get a hamburger and to her favorite variety store in Rockville.  He would take his canine companion, BeefBurger, out for ice cream and go to the park to eat ice cream.

Born Jan. 16, 1938 in Lafayette, he was the son of Frank E. Hawn and Ethel Friday Hawn.  He attended school at Darlington and graduated from Dover High School.  He reconnected with Sonja Woodruff after 59 years of being apart.  He loved her family and they loved him.

Surviving family includes: daughter, Teresa (Wayne) Haughton; companion, Sonja Woodruff; together they had nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; his canine companion, BeefBurger.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Robert Hawn and Richard Hawn, two sisters, Helen Weiderhaft and Virginia Luthi, one granddaughter, Ashley Haughton.

Visitation for Jack Hawn will begin at 11 AM on Saturday, Feb. 15th at Burkhart Funeral Home, Crawfordsville.  Services will begin at 12 Noon with Masonic rites and military rites.  After the service, he will be laid to rest at the Yeoman Cemetery in Yeoman, Indiana.
