Obituary

Harriet E. Bowes of Crawfordsville passed away Wednesday evening at the Ben-Hur Home.  She was 99.

Born March 30, 1921 in Ottawa, Illinois, she was the daughter of Hans Olson and Florence Mildred Thompson Olson.  She attended school in Ottawa, and then Serena High School.

She was a long-time member of the Crawfordsville First Church of the Nazarene, where she belonged to the missionary society and the women's ministry.  She was the neighborhood "cookie lady," making dozens of cookies every week and giving them to those around her.  She was an avid reader and also liked to travel with a group of her friends.  She spent many years as a homemaker, but also worked in the children's department at J.C. Penney for over 20 years.

Surviving family includes: four sons, Roger Bowes of Chandler, Arizona, Bob Bowes of Crawfordsville, Gary Bowes (Fe') of Florida, Craig Bowes (Debby) of Jamestown; daughter, Nancy Wheeler (Scott) of Shelbyville; daughter-in-law, Nancy Bowes of Crawfordsville; eleven grandchildren, Chris Bowes, Brian Bowes, Jenny Bowes, Curt Bowes, Matt Wheeler, Tony Bowes, Kyle Wheeler, Jordan Bowes, Lorann Dwyer, Josh Holder and Joe Langolf; several great-grandchildren, as well as great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Wendell and Harland Olson, sister, Mary Oswalt, two sons, Keith Bowes, Larry Bowes and daughter-in-law, Judy.

A family service will be held at Burkhart Funeral Home on Monday, May 11 th at 11 AM, followed by interment at Oak Hill Cemetery North.

Donations in memory of Harriet Bowes may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 50 East 91 st Street, Indianapolis, IN 46209-4830.  The family would also ask for special prayers for the residents and staff at the Ben Hur Home.
