Gary H. Wininger of Crawfordsville passed away Friday evening at Ben Hur Home. He was 86.
He was born December 5, 1933 to Hilbert and Olive Jones Wininger. On December 22, 1956 he married his wife of 63 years Phyllis E. Kerns in Dubois County, Indiana. She survives.
He graduated from Shoals High School in 1951. He attended Indiana State University and served in the United States Army as a member of the 82 nd Airborne Division. After the Army he graduated from Indiana State University with a Bachelors and Masters of Education in Industrial Arts. He began his Teaching Career in 1956 at Crawfordsville High School. Where he was instrumental in developing Vocational (ICT) Education programs in Montgomery County. He retired from Teaching in 1994. He was also a Carpenter and Member of Carpenters Local 859 of Greencastle.
He was an avid gardener, a skilled wood worker, and he enjoyed playing cards, doing puzzles. His memberships included Christ Lutheran Church, the American Legion of Shoals, Eagles of Shoals, Carpenters Local 849 of Greencastle and was active with the Montgomery County Retired Teachers Association.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons Brian (Martha) Wininger, of Crawfordsville, Brent (Linda) Wininger of Crawfordsville and Brad (Dondra) Wininger, of Waveland; grandchildren Morgan (Dr. Michael) Shanks of Terre Haute, Brittany (Keith) Hatten of Zionsville, Courtney Wininger of Knoxville, Tennessee, Brooke (Kory) Chapman of Greenfield, Paige Wininger of Lafayette and Peyton Wininger of Waveland; great-grandchildren Jane, Miles and Polly Shanks, Henley Hatten, Brody and Brandan Chapman.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Sherman and Donald Wininger.
Visitation will be Wednesday, February 19th from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at Burkhart Funeral Home, 201 W. Wabash Avenue, Crawfordsville. Funeral services will be 4:00 PM Thursday, February 20 th at Christ Lutheran Church, 300 W. South Blvd., Crawfordsville, with Pastor Kelly Nelson officiating. Military Honors will be conducted by the U.S. Army and Byron Cox Post 72 Honor Guard. Burial will be 2:00 PM Friday at the Albright Cemetery near Shoals.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to Christ Lutheran Church, Crawfordsville, Indiana
