Obituary

Eugene "Gene" Covert passed away at home, surrounded by the love of his wife and daughter, on February 28, 2026. He was 84 years old.

Gene was born on December 12, 1941, in Evansville, Indiana, to Eugene S. Covert and Helen Soderling Covert. He grew up in Vincennes, Indiana, where he graduated from Lincoln High School. He later attended the University of Illinois and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Advertising Design from the Herron School of Art - beginning a lifelong career shaped by creativity, craftsmanship, and thoughtful design.

On September 8, 1967, Gene married the love of his life, Judy Harris, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Together they shared 58 devoted years of marriage - filled with love, faith, partnership, and mutual devotion. Their marriage was a steady and joyful foundation for their family and a beautiful example to all who knew them.

Gene worked at various art studios and advertising agencies before joining Indiana Bell, where he built a respected career, retiring in 1995. His love for design and problem‑solving continued well into retirement through freelance work.

Gene's faith became central to his life after he came to know the Lord in 1980. He served faithfully as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher at East 91st Street Christian Church in Indianapolis. In addition, Gene served as a discussion leader for Bible Study Fellowship, a role through which he found great purpose, fellowship, and joy in studying and sharing God's Word.  After moving to Crawfordsville, he continued his service as a Sunday School discussion leader with the Open Door Class at First Baptist Church.

Gene was a man of many interests and quiet passions. He was a proud member of Lambda Chi Alpha at the University of Illinois and an active member of the Porsche Club of America, where he served as past president, newspaper editor, and designer of the Indianapolis region logo. A lifelong sports car enthusiast, Gene especially loved Porsche automobiles, Formula 1 and IndyCar racing. He also enjoyed military and sports car modeling - hobbies that reflected his patience, precision, and artistic eye.

Above all, Gene cherished relationships. He was a loyal and steadfast friend who maintained dear friendships lasting more than half a century. His kindness, humor, generosity, and thoughtful presence left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

Gene is survived by his beloved wife, Judy Covert of Crawfordsville; his daughter, Stephanie Covert Gupte; his son‑in‑law, Nitin Gupte; his niece, Becky Murray Schnider; his nephew, Brad Murray; and many cherished in‑laws and extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene S. and Helen Covert, and his sister, Cynthia Murray.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, at Burkhart Funeral Home from 10:30 a.m. until noon, with the funeral service beginning at noon. Gene will be laid to rest privately at Pisgah Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Open Door Class at First Baptist Church, 1905 Lebanon Road, Crawfordsville, IN 47933
