DAVID S. RECORD – 1945-2026 – Age 81
David S. Record, a life-long resident of Crawfordsville, passed from this life to his heavenly eternal dwelling place early Monday morning, April 27. He died at home, during sleep, with his wife, Barbara, at his side. He was 81 and had suffered from thyroid cancer and heart issues for the past couple of years.
David was born in Crawfordsville on February 27, 1945 to Howard and Imogene (Damewood) Record. He grew up on the family farm with his two brothers, Lawrence and Philip, who he would occasionally supervise over farm responsibilities after school when mom and dad were in town on errands. David graduated from Crawfordsville High School in 1963 and went to work for the former Ramsey Farm Equipment dealer northwest of town. He was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Vietnam conflict era, but spent his tour of duty overseas in Germany.
After service to his country David spent several years at the former Raybestos plant in Crawfordsville but most of his work career was at the former Mid-States Steel & Wire Company. He worked there as a machinist up to the time of its closing. David then went next door to work for Sommer Metalcraft, where he retired in 2008.
David married Barbara Slavens on June 8, 1969 while attending the former Pleasant View Baptist Church in Crawfordsville. They had corresponded with each other during his tour of military duty in Germany. They bought a house east of Crawfordsville where they started their family and raised four children: Dana Record (deceased) Crawfordsville; Adam (Rhonda) Record, Crawfordsville; Tonya Record, Crawfordsville; & Daniel Record, Lebanon. They also gave home to a dog named Spike and a cat named Sambo. The family later moved to a larger home and current residence with some acreage outside New Market.
David and Barbara were very active Christians at Pleasant View Baptist Church where their children also learned of God's truth for living life based on Biblical principles. In later years they moved their membership over to East Side Baptist Church where both were very active, with David serving as a deacon and a Sunday School teacher of teens.
In addition to their surviving children, David and Barbara have 4 grandchildren; Jacob (Emily) Record, Crawfordsville; Landon Record; Lafayette; Mitchell Record, Arizona; and Joel (Crystal) Record, Crawfordsville. They also have 6 great grandchildren; Benjamin, Charlotte, Austen, Zoey, Cade, and Jack. David is also survived by his two brothers: Lawrence Record, Lafayette; and Philip (Karen) Record, Crawfordsville.
Preceding David in death are his parents, Howard and Imogene Record; a daughter, Dana Record; and a step mother, Shirley (Barker) Record.
Visitation is scheduled for 10:00am to 12 noon, Friday, May 1 at Eastside Baptist Church, 2000 Traction Road, Crawfordsville. A memorial service will begin at noon with Pastor Steve Whicker officiating. Interment will be at Indian Creek Cemetery on State Road 47 South.
In lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations be made to Eastside Baptist Church.
