Lowell B. Stewart of Crawfordsville passed away Thursday at 9:45 PM in Ben Hur Nursing Home. He was 85.
Mr. Stewart worked at Sommer Metalcraft and ran his own flooring business. He enjoyed radios, reel to reel recordings, reading and animals. He attended Shannondale schools.
Mr. Stewart was a decorated veteran, receiving the Asiatic Pacific Medal and Victory Medal, Service Star and American Theater Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Ribbon and Purple Heart from the 77th Infantry Division on June 10, 1945. After completing his station on Sapporo Hokkaido, Japan, he was honorably discharged on Nov. 27, 1945.
Born May 31, 1926 in Shannondale, he was the son of Grover C. and Clara Mae Purdue Stewart. He married Phyllis Bowles Stewart on Nov. 6, 1954. She passed away on April 7, 2004.
Survivors include a niece, Patricia Stewart (William) Long, nephews, Wayne Palmer, Tom Stewart, Jerry Stewart and several great-nieces and great-nephews as well as great-great-nieces and nephews and great-great-great nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Norman M. Stewart, sister, Elizabeth A. Elliott and niece, Theada Brown.
Cremation arrangements were made through Burkhart Funeral Home. His ashes will be buried with graveside rites at 5 PM Thursday, March 29, at the Shannondale Cemetery.
Memorial contributions can be made to the St. Jude Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1942 as Lowell supported it for many years as he loved kids in spite of never having any of his own.
